What Is the V5C and Why Is It Important?
The V5C (commonly called the logbook) is the vehicle registration certificate. It records the registered keeper of the vehicle and contains important information including:

- VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
- Engine number
Important: The V5C doesn’t prove ownership – it shows who is responsible for taxing and insuring the vehicle. However, buyers understandably want to see it before purchasing.
Options If You’ve Lost Your V5
Option 1: Apply for a Replacement
You can apply to the DVLA for a replacement V5C. This costs £25 and can be done online or by post. Turnaround is typically 5-7 working days, though it can be longer.
Option 2: Sell With the Green Slip
If you recently bought the car and haven’t received your V5C yet, you should have the green “new keeper” slip from the previous V5. This can be used to transfer ownership.
Option 3: Sell to a Professional Buyer
